Introducing: Sky's Write-Up Compendium

I’ve always believed that one of the hardest parts of doing anything is actually starting it, and this introduction is no exception. This mainly stems from how hard I feel it can be to properly write out my thoughts on any given topic. I struggle because no matter how well organized my thoughts seem to be, putting them onto the page can be a herculean effort because rarely am I ever satisfied with what’s written. Yet, I still like to challenge myself to write my thoughts because properly expressing my thoughts and feelings is satisfying to say the least. I recently graduated college with an English degree because, no matter how frustrated the work made me feel, I would always end up satisfied to see my thoughts and analysis on different ideas come together. The most recent case of this was for my big final thesis, which I dedicated to Metal Gear Solid 2. Writing about a medium that I love, video games, and exploring how it related to a particular theme (speculative fiction) was some of the most fun I’ve had writing ever.

    There are tons of different video games and other fictional works I’ve fallen in love with over the years that I constantly think about and would love to explore my feelings on, but I lacked an outlet to really let loose and talk at length about them. None of my IRL friends are quite as into games as I am, and they’re definitely not playing the game franchises I enjoy, so I can’t really turn to them to yap away about how the wait for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is killing me internally. As I’ve grown older and gotten a smidge better at writing, I began to desire some way to express my many different thoughts on this medium that has shaped who I am as a person since the very beginning. To really challenge myself to properly elaborate on why specific games speak to me and my person the way they do, to give my personal thoughts on certain topics related to the medium, to finally express myself in relation to my biggest passion. Those desires, as well as the need to have a healthy stress-relief outlet from life, are what led me to the decision to start up this blog.


    So, hi! Welcome to Sky’s Write-Up Compendium. This place will be a space for me to give my in-depth thoughts on personal interests, which predominantly consists of video games though occasionally I’d like to mix things up with something different. I’ve played through many different genres of games, though JRPGs and Action Platformers are generally what I gravitate towards the most. The types of pieces I post will vary. Sometimes I’ll simply be gushing about something that I played recently, while other times I want to really dig deep into why I adore some of my all time favorites. I also want to write up things like character analysis pieces for my absolute favorite characters. As I noted earlier, I’m making this blog predominantly for fun. The goal is to really get my creative thinking skills going in relation to something I love, hopefully improving how I express myself in the process. With that being said, thank you for reading this short intro piece! Hope you’ll stick around for more.

Video games as a medium contain a vast ocean of genres and franchises for people to explore, and inevitably people will find those series. The ones that, for one reason or another, resonate with you above all others. This can be for a number of reasons. Maybe they’ve been around for years or they helped you get through a rough patch in life. As we play and explore, inevitably we find the select series that we become the most attached through. Throughout my life, I’ve more or less established a group of series that I can reliably turn to whenever I’m absolutely positive I need a good time. Sky Reflects on His Favorite Game Franchises - The Second Half (Megami Tensei, Trails, & Dragon Quest)

  P art one predominantly focused on the franchises that I got into at a young age. They’re the ones that have been in my mental sphere the longest and my more formulative experiences growing up. This week, we’re focusing on the series I discovered in my teenage years and onwards, which are all JRPGs. JRPGs have defined the later half of my gaming career, and while I haven’t touched absolutely every series out there, I have played enough to have a good understanding of the different flavors of the genre I’m looking for that the next three series provide for me. These franchises are Megami Tensei , the Trails series, and Dragon Quest. I haven’t only played the franchises listed here and have favorites from other series such as Final Fantasy and Xenoblade, but as a collective whole I can always rely on the three we'll discuss here to get me through tough life experiences with a good time.
