X's Unending Internal Struggle: A Battle Between Conflicting Ideals and Actions

"X" is the first in a new generation of robots which contain an innovative new feature - the ability to think, feel, and make their own decisions. However, this ability could be very dangerous. If "X" were to break the first rule of robotics, "A Robot Must Never Harm A Human Being" the results would be disastrous and I fear that no force on Earth could stop him.

Approximately 30 years will be required before we can safely confirm his reliability. Unfortunately, I will not live to see that day, nor do I have anyone to carry out my work. Therefore, I have decided to seal him in this capsule which will test his internal systems until his reliability has been confirmed. Please do not disturb the capsule until that time.

"X" possesses great risks as well as great possibilities. I can only hope for the best.

September 18th, 20XX

T. Light 

Dr. Thomas Light spent all of his life striving for a world where humans and robots could co-exist in peace. All of his studies and efforts went towards that ideal. He built countless helper robots that would assist humans in their daily lives, from filling out specific niches to enhancing the speed in which mundane tasks are done. These helper robots would have personalities to match what they designed to do, with Rock and Roll in particular having incredibly human-like sentience. They weren’t without flaw however, as they could still be reprogrammed or constructed with the intent to cause havoc as Dr. Albert Wily showcased time and time again. Robots were still bound by their programming and the laws of robotics. But despite the dangers and setbacks Dr. Light knew existed, he continued to pursue that ideal world of his, one where co-existence prevailed above all. This would eventually lead him to his final and most ambitious project. A robot that transcended the laws of robotics, one who could truly think and act on their own accord. While Dr. Light would make miraculous progress with this robot, he knew deep down his old age would prevent him from truly conducting proper testing to make sure that this robot was ready for the world. So he sealed the robot away for 30 years, urging any one who would happen to discover the robot to leave it alone until the time has come for it to awaken. This robot, Dr. Light's magnum opus, was X.

X Promising Dr. Light That He Will Use His Power to Fight for Hope

X and Dr. Light had very little interaction before the latter passed away, but when they did speak X found beauty in Dr. Light's idea for a peaceful world. He would go on to internalize this ideal for the duration of his slumber, deciding that he would also advocate for a peaceful world as well. 30 years after being sealed away, X would be awakened by Dr. Cain, who was deeply impressed by X's ability to think and act completely on his own. Dr. Cain would go on to design a number of robots that could also think and act of their own accord in a similar vein to X, knowing that X's capabilities would establish the next big step in robotics. The robots developed by Dr. Cain would come to be known as Reploids, and the plan was to have them live alongside humans with no issue. This plan would run into a lot of issues however, since these Reploids wouldn't undergo the rigorous testing X did. As a result, Reploids could have their brains short-circuit and create a lust for domination due to their inherit strength over humans. Reploids who succumbed to this would be labeled as Mavericks, and as more popped up to wreak havoc Dr. Cain established the Maverick Hunters. Maverick Hunters would work together to capture any Mavericks engaging in crime, not hesitating to kill them should the need arise. X joined the hunters as Maverick's destructive actions went against what he stood for, with him working alongside respected Commander Sigma and Zero (Dr. Wily's Last Creation). Eventually, Sigma would go Maverick himself and break away from the hunters, with the ensuing years-long conflict constantly leaving X at odds with himself and his ideals.

X may be a pacifist at heart, but Dr. Light knew thanks to previous experiences that there may come a time where X would need to fend for himself. So along with X’s ability to go beyond programming to think for himself, he also gave X extremely potent combat abilities. He has a mega buster with the ability to charge and can absorb his enemies powers like Rock, but new to X are the various armor sets that Dr. Light produces for him throughout the series. These armors all enhance X’s abilities in multiple ways, such as enhancing his charged shot, reducing the weapon energy cost for special weapons, halving the damage he takes, etc. There are also special armor sets like the Gaia armor which focuses squarely on defense at the cost of movement or the Falcon armor which gives X the ability to fly for a brief moment. For the most desperate hour, Light also created the Ultimate armor for X, with X becoming essentially unstoppable with it on. Dr. Light hid these armor sets away before his passing, hoping that they would never be used. If X were to discover them during times of struggle, his hope was that he would use these armor sets for good. With all these tools at his disposal, X could champion peace should the time arise to protect it….should he choose to do so.

One of the key aspects of X noted early on, given even more attention in Maverick Hunter X and its accompanying OVA The Day of Sigma, is that X might as well be one of the most dangerous weapons on the planet. A robot granted the ability of free thought that has extremely potent combat abilities to defend the innocent sounds revolutionary on paper, but should X ever lean into a darker character he’s suddenly one of humanity's greatest threats. X’s latent potential actually ends up kickstarting Sigma’s rebellion in the OVA. He doesn’t have any specific nature programmed into him, the main reason he believes in peace is because his brief conversations with Dr. Light before his passing resonated with him. Whose to say X can’t change his mind or worldview one day? What’s really stopping him from enacting justice with rigorous force? He has plenty of means to do so, more than any character we often come across. X stands for a non-violent world, but is also inherently an absurdly strong super weapon, and that’s where the main conflict of his character lies.

X Overlooking The Damage From Sigma's Attack in Day of Sigma

X hates fighting. He despises it. He sees no value in the bloodshed and would give anything to see that a non-violent solution is pursued. The endings of X1 - X3 see X constantly reflecting on the battles he just engaged in, pondering just how long the senseless wars will go on. Why do the Mavericks wish to cause the uproars they do? Why can we simply not talk over our differences and come to a compromise? For some Mavericks, they simply find joy in fighting and disrupting the peace. For others, they have deeply personal ideologies/reasonings that force their hands. Regardless of the reasoning, what this means for X is that he’ll constantly be forced to pick back up his arm cannon, and when does he’s practically unstoppable. He absolutely decimates through enemy defense while on the field, thwarting any and every plan Sigma has in place. It gets the job done and protects what he values, but these victories often ring hollow for X. He knows that the fighting will only bring about more fighting. As he’s one of the most capable Maverick hunters out there, this also means that eventually he’ll have to put a hold on the tranquility to fight another day.

Ultimately, it’s hard to say if X ever does find inner resolution between his pacifist nature and combat capabilities. He attempts to take a step back from fighting entirely in X7, though ultimately returns to the field after he realizes that sitting by waiting for platitudes that’ll likely never come will only lead to more casualties. In the end, he knows he has to fight. The other option of doing nothing only escalates a desperate situation. The Mega Man Zero series reveals that he would eventually rid the world of Sigma thanks to the Mother Elf, but even that would become corrupted with time leading to an entirely new conflict with Dr. Weil as he corrupts the Mother Elf into the Dark Elf. Peace stripped away yet again in favor of another war for power. In the end, he uses his body to seal away the corrupted Dark Elf, though even this plan would eventually go awry. Even in a post-Sigma world, X could never escape the unending battles. What could he have been thinking during his final act of bravery to seal the Dark Elf? Was he sad that his life led to this despite all of his struggles? Was he happy to finally have some sort of escape?

An Unending Battle

X stands as a very tragic character in retrospect. A major step in evolution for robotics, his free thinking and desire for peace could’ve led to a new era where Reploids were produced and able to truly live alongside humanity in a new age of peace. Unfortunately, X would instead spend his entire existence in conflict. In conflict with Sigma, in conflict with Mavericks, in conflict with the Dark Elf, and in conflict with his own participation in the bloodshed as he fights for a better world. Any given moment of reprise was ultimately taken from him as others' lust for power kept dragging the people he loved into turmoil, ultimately leading to the man never truly knowing whether his ideal could ever see the light of day. Yet, despite all of this he never once stopped championing that ideal. To the bitter end he truly believed that maybe, just maybe, there will be a day where everyone will lay down their arms and never see a need to take them up again. For all his struggles, he certainly lived up to Dr. Lights hopes for him. To be a robot indistinguishable from a human.
